Because of the rolling process during production, coiled steel coils are a moisture sensitive product. To ensure that these coils can be transported to processing plants without corrosion damage, the automotive industry developed a specially designed flat cart with three interlocking hoods, the Shis 708 and from 1987 Shimmns 708. For easy loading with coils, the hoods can be moved as required and the five loading bins embedded in the vehicle frame are detached. The Deutsche Bundesbahn ordered more than 2,500 Shis / Shimmns 708s in two large lots. However, due to further orders from other state railroads and rental companies, the actual number of vehicles of this type is considerably larger. Because the hoods became more maintenance-intensive with age, DB AG had the hoods replaced with sliding tarps on 1,000 cars starting in 2002 and renumbered these vehicles as Shimmns-ttu 772. Private operators, however, still use vehicles in their original condition.
