The LokSound 5 XL decoder is quite a large device. It has to be, because it is intended for use in large-scale model railroads, e.g. garden railroads and 1-track models. The integrated PowerPack, matching the larger motor power, ensures reliable operation even on dirty tracks. The LokSound 5 XL measures 51 mm x 40 mm and is available in two different types: Besides the type with robust screw terminals for installation in older models without interface connection, there is a version with multipole connectors. This version fits all locomotives where an older type of LokSound XL decoder was previously installed.

Operating mode:
As with all products in the LokSound family, the LokSound 5 XL is a true multiprotocol decoder. It supports DCC as well as Motorola®, Selectrix® and M4. Naturally, it supports 14 to 128 speed steps, 2- and 4-digit addresses in DCC format and up to 32 functions. Thanks to RailComPlus®, the decoders register fully automatically with suitable central units. LGB® chain control can operate functions and their associated buttons with older LGB® operating systems. This decoder supports all DCC programming modes and, thanks to RailCom®, you can read CV values on the network, provided you have a central unit that supports RailCom®. There are auxiliary program registers for central units that only facilitate programming CVs from 1 to 255. Motorola® users benefit from up to 28 speed steps and 255 addresses. Three additional Motorola® addresses allow activation of 16 functions. An integral programming mode allows even programming with the good old central unit 6021. The M4 protocol supports automatic login to mfx®-compatible central units. The LokSound 5 XL decoder supports Märklin® brake sections as well as ZIMO® HLU brake commands or the Lenz® ABC system. Braking with DCC brake generators or with DC is also possible. In addition, with a LokSound 5 XL, the locomotive comes to a stop when a Selectrix® brake diode is connected to the circuit. The ABC push-pull function enables automatic shunting between two stations. The LokSound 5 XL decoder is also suitable for analog DC and AC trainsets.

Sound:
the LokSound 5 XL decoder can output up to 10 channels simultaneously. Each channel offers up to 16 bit / 31250 kHz and thus we have finally achieved hi-fi sound quality on your layout. For all practical purposes, one cannot detect any difference from the original. A dual Class D audio amplifier with up to 2 x 6 W output power feeds the speakers with an allowable impedance of 4 32 Ohms. The sound volume can be controlled by two separate potentiometers. The huge sound memory of 128 MBit provides sufficient storage capacity. The volume of all individual sound fragments can be adjusted individually. The extraordinarily flexible sound engine without rigid flow chart allows prototypical simulation of all conceivable railroad vehicles. Three individually adjustable braking functions and two alternative loading scenarios offer you maximum control over your vehicles.

Functions:
each LokSound 5 XL decoder features 12 amplified function outputs. In addition, there are an additional 7 logic outputs, which can control four RC servos or SUSI expansion modules if desired. Of course, all major lighting functions are supported. The brightness of each output can be adjusted individually. The decoder supports the automatic push and pull motions also called the torque roller required for reliable operation of digital couplers such as those from ROCO® and Krois®, as well as Telex® couplers. Three sensor inputs can be used to activate functions.

Motor control:
The motor control of the LokSound 5 XL has been further improved. A variable PWM pulse frequency from 10 kHz to 50 kHz ensures perfect quiet operation, especially with coreless motors. The typical hum is thus a thing of the past. Load control can now be adjusted with up to 10 individual CVs and can thus handle even the most difficult cases. The unique Auto Tune function facilitates the automatic calibration of the decoder to perfectly match the engine. The LokSound 5 XL decoder provides ample current for the motor, namely up to 5.0 A (4.0 A continuous). Thus the decoder can also handle locomotives from track G by PIKO®, as well as locomotives with two Bühler® or Mabuchi® motors.
