Example: Express train steam locomotive of Bavarian type S 2/6 in the color green with black smoke room door and red driving gear. Rebuilt on the basis of the locomotive preserved in the Nürnberg Transportation Museum. Version in museum condition as a locomotive of the Königliche Bayrischen Staatsbahn (K.Bay.Sts.B.), period I.
The express train steam locomotive of the Bavarian type S 2/6At the beginning of the twentieth century, attempts by several German railroad companies to run locomotives as fast as possible caused a great stir. The Bavarian State Railway Company (K.Bay.Sts.B) also had an express train locomotive built in 1905 as part of this speed race. Already one year later Maffei delivered the S 2/6, designed under the direction of chief engineer Anton Hamel, with the locomotive number 3201.The S 2/6 was a 2’B2 hot steam locomotive with double cylinders and an open frame frame with a top speed of 150 km/h and an axle load of 16 tons. As novelties, this locomotive had the design of the chassis with front and rear bogies that ensured it stayed well in the rails and the construction of the tender water box as a self-supporting design. Although the locomotive did not have full fairing, certain parts were designed to reduce drag. Curved plating was located in front of the cylinders, the smoke chamber door was cone-shaped and the chimney and steam dome were given windage. The engine house was also streamlined and blended seamlessly into the boiler plating. In July 1907 the machine reached a top speed of 154.5 km on the Munich – Augsburg line with a 150 ton test train, setting a world record. The locomotive was then stationed in Munich and from 1910 in Ludwigshafen and ran from there for express trains to Strassburg and Bingerbrück. In 1922 she was returned to Munich and from 1923 she was stationed in Augsburg. She never carried her DRG locomotive number 15 001 because already in 1925 this unique model received a place of honor in the Verkehrsmuseum Nürnberg. And so the S 2/6 played a tragic double role in her history. True, in 1906 it was technically ahead of its time and fulfilled its tasks perfectly, but its design was overtaken after only a short time, particularly by the rapid technical demands made on locomotive frames. As a result, with the exception of a few operating years in the Paltz, the S 2/6 soon found itself in the role of unloved loner. Apart from record trips in 1907, she therefore remained a design quickly overtaken by time, was never taken into series production and disappeared from regular service after a few operating years. But her historical significance lies not so much in her labor history as in her technical and conceptual pioneering role that influenced more than just locomotive design.
The Type S 2/6 express train steam locomotive is being produced as a one-time edition on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Nürnberg Transportation Museum.
