The “Iron” or simply the E 10.3: There is hardly a German locomotive type that expressed the heyday of the Bundesbahn from the 1960s as much as the elegant, streamlined type E 10.3 machine. Its impressive success story began in the Fifties when the young German Federal Railroad vigorously began the electrification of the network and ordered the elegant and powerful electric locomotive type E 10 in large numbers. The first versions (E 10.0 and E 10.1) still had an ugly, angular locomotive body. In 1962, however, the first examples appeared with aerodynamic fronts. Due to its striking design with the flat center roof, the variant classified as E 10.3 soon received the nickname “Iron”. For decades, the E-10 locomotives were the workhorses in the DB’s high-quality passenger service, and the Iron definitely became 1 of the celebrities on the German rail network. From 1990 the E-10 locomotives disappeared to regional traffic and there too they showed themselves to be very reliable. The last Irons only disappeared to the scrapyard in 2013 with many millions of kilometers on the clock.
