The Flying Scotsman in black
World-famous, fast, strong and a true legend: The steam locomotive with the resounding name “Flying Scotsman” conquered numerous world records and made railroad history in the process. For decades, she pulled the eponymous British express train that raced from Edinburgh to London and back without stopping. In 1934 she was the first steam locomotive to reach the magic speed of 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) and later even raced around the USA and Australia . On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of this three-cylinder powerhouse, Märklin brought out the current museum variant in the famous green color already in 2023. Now follows as a special edition a black version that tells of a fascinating period in the life of this locomotive with special features. During the Second World War and in the first years thereafter, the green color had to give way to a beautiful black as was the case with many English steam locomotives at that time.During the major maintenance work that began in 2006, the color black was chosen again to protect the locomotive during the final assembly and tests. During this time young and old could relive the Flying Scotsman in this unique livery. First, at the “Rail Festival,” a major railroad festival in 2011 that took place simultaneously with the Olympics in London and in 2012 in York to celebrate the city’s 800th anniversary. The locomotive wore this color for the last time on further test and trial runs in 2016, then she regained her green colors from British Railways and, bearing the number 60103 makes her fans happy. In the form of this magnificent Märklin model, the memory lives on in scale of this special variant of the Flying Scotsman and tells of an important chapter in the life of this fascinating European steam giant.
